CARBON OFFSET

The indigenous Tlingit community is protecting over 20,000 acres of forest in Alaska, 8,000 acres of which is home to centuries-old trees.

The project location includes several different ecosystems ranging from beaches to areas of high elevation. This project ensures the long-term sustainable management of the area, which could otherwise undergo significant commercial timber harvesting.

This project protects almost 2-million acres of forests and wildlife that form a giant biodiversity corridor near the Zimbabwe-Zambia border.

The reduction in deforestation will be achieved through a series of activities that are designed to significantly improve the livelihoods of locals, such as improved agriculture, beekeeping, fuelwood plantations and fire management.

In addition, a significant share of the project’s carbon income will be invested in general activities that promote and guarantee project sustainability.

This project involves converting forestry and food production residues into biochar and locking the carbon contained in organic matter into a stable, solid form for thousands of years.

The Finnish-Californian firm uses nature’s massive carbon drawdown engine: plants. Through photosynthesis, plants capture atmospheric carbon and store it. However, as plants die, the carbon emerges back into the atmosphere. Carbo Culture breaks this cycle by converting biomass into biochar before the carbon can re-emerge. The high-quality material is stored in soils and will remain there for 1,000+ years.

Charm Industrial has created a novel process for preparing and injecting bio-oil into geologic storage. Bio-oil is produced from biomass and maintains much of the carbon that was captured naturally by the plants. By injecting it into secure geologic storage, they make the carbon storage permanent.

This project involves generating wind energy in the Hebei Province of China and displacing fossil-fuel-generated energy to improve air quality.

The wind farm contains 33 sets of turbines with a total installed capacity of 49.5MW. Electricity generated by the project is delivered to the North China Power Grid (NCPG) and displaces power that would have been supplied by fossil-fuel-fired power plants, thereby avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants.

This project generates hydroelectric power in Turkey using a low-impact plant with a small reservoir that has a smaller environmental footprint than large hydroelectric plants.

The hydropower plant was constructed with the goal of generating electricity for the Turkish National Electric Grid without releasing airborne pollutants. The plant displaces fossil-fuel-fired electricity, positively affecting the environment and benefitting the national and regional economy.

This project captures methane gas from a landfill in New York using underground gas wells and converts the gas into energy.

In addition to the significant greenhouse gas emission reductions from the destruction of methane that would otherwise have been released into the atmosphere, the project lowers methane levels in groundwater and increases safety by avoiding methane migration.

The project is located at the Trans-Jordan Landfill, a 200-acre sanitary MSW landfill near Salt Lake City that has been in operation for 50 years. Landfill gas is sent to three separate Caterpillar 3520 (1.6MW) generator engines and an open flare for destruction.

Most families in rural communities in Myanmar burn wood over a three-stone hearth for cooking. As a result, Myanmar has one of the highest deforestation rates in the world. The project replaces the use of three-stone open fires with modern, fuel-efficient cook stoves, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

The project has been successful in distributing over 14,000 fuel-efficient stoves that have improved the lives of more than 60,000 people.

The quality of water in Rwanda is typically not safe to drink; for clean water, families must either boil it over inefficient wood-fuelled fires or travel long distances. Boreholes offer an excellent solution; however, communities are often unable to maintain them over the long term.

This project restores and repairs existing boreholes to provide clean drinking water to Rwandan communities, removing the need to boil water for purification, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions as well as deforestation pressures on surrounding forests where firewood is sourced.
